History of the Indoor Theater
| The City of Maumee purchased the vacant Maumee Indoor
Theater located at 601 Conant Street, in Uptown Maumee on
August 6, 2000. That same day, the City also
acquired an option to purchase the property located directly across
the street from the Theater; being a former BP/Sohio
gas station and car wash.
The primary purpose for acquiring the Theater
was to
restore a historically significant structure, which along
with the abandoned BP property, had become eyesores at
the entrance to our old central business district. At
the time of purchase, the Maumee Indoor had been dormant for
four years. Notwithstanding the fact that the building
was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on
April 1, 1998, it had continued to deteriorate for a lack of
maintenance.
The City hired Poggemeyer Design Group to design
and restore the Theater. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on July 25,
2003 and after 9 months of restoration, a beautiful and
historic art deco Theater is back in operation for all to
enjoy!
