Mayor's Welcome Letter

Welcome to the City of Maumee, an All-America City in every respect!  June 2006 brought great news to our residents as we were named a 2006 All-America City in Anaheim, CA.  We were also included in: “Best Places to Raise Your Family – The Top 100 Affordable Communities in the U.S.  Publised 05/06 by Frommer’s, a nationally respected travel guide.  The nation is discovering what we’ve always known, the City of Maumee is truly an All-America City!

Maumee has 13 City parks, with walking trails, playground equipment, ball fields, and shelter houses.  Rolf Park, our largest facility, is home to a beautiful pool built in 2004, complete with water slides and fountains, which prove fun for people of all ages!  Our Chamber of Commerce and Uptown Business Association host the Annual Summer Fair and Parade, Summer Concert Series in Uptown Maumee, and the 4th of July Pre-Fireworks Party.  We also have a 5k Race and beautiful Holiday Light Parade the evening after Thanksgiving which officially welcomes Santa Claus to town.  The Wolcott House Museum Complex continues to grow, offering special events for school aged children and adults and the Historic Maumee Indoor Theater, an art deco theater originally built in 1946, has been completely restored and offers family fun at affordable prices.  We are home to 13 churches of various denominations, and have a fantastic school system – which was recently rated “EXCELLENT” by the State of Ohio!

Founded in 1817 as one of the earliest settlements in the old Northwest Territory, our city pre-dates most of the cities in Northwest Ohio, including our larger neighbor, the city of Toledo. Our strategic position as a transportation crossroads contributed to the early growth of our city then, and it is equally true today. Many of the architectural gems of early America are still prominent in our community, such as Fort Miamis, the House of Four Pillars, the Wolcott House, our central business district and the Fallen Timbers Battlefield.  Each year the Maumee Senior Center hosts the Historic Maumee Home Tour and many homes are featured on our Virtual Home Tour on this web site.

While proud of our past, we are a modern, progressive community of 15,074 residents who host over 32,000 employees in the many businesses and industries that reside in Maumee. Along with our historic central business district, we have cooperated with the private sector to create Arrowhead Business Park, a community of over 200 businesses and 15,000 employees that is a model of progressive economic development in Ohio and in the United States.

Our success in economic development provides a low tax rate and revenue growth resulting in a high quality of life for our people.  Our low income tax rate of 1.5% has not changed in over 30 years. We can guarantee that you will receive more “bang for your buck” and a wonderful community experience in our great city.

If you want to know more about us, send a message to mayor@maumee.org and I will be happy to tell you more about this great community at “the foot of the rapids”.

Very truly yours,

Richard H. Carr, Mayor
