James Knaggs / Lindsey House. A
short distance downriver from the George Knaggs house is the
home of his brother, James Knaggs and his wife Therese (Campau),
also located on the Knaggs grant. James, George and
their brother John continued their father's trading
operation and established a post near Fort Miami. In
1825, Whitmore gave his three sons adjacent tracts of land
fronting on the Maumee River where each built a
home.
James was active in the commercial activities of
the area and accrued considerable property as a result of
his dealings with the Ottawa Indians. His handsome
Greek revival home is defined by the classic doorway with
sidelights and transom framed by reeded pilasters, and a
wide cornice.
John's home was said to have been located west of this
home. The wedding of John and Malinda Gunn in 1823 was
the social event of the season, uniting two pioneer
families.
